Pritzker Extending Illinois’ Ban On Evictions During Pandemic

Renters who have fallen behind on their payments will be protected from eviction for another month amid the coronavirus pandemic.

ILLINOIS — Gov. J.B. Pritzker will extend the state’s moratorium on evictions before it expires Saturday, his office said. Renters who have fallen behind on their payments will be protected from eviction for another month amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, the governor also extended the deadline for renters to apply for a $5,000 to help cover their housing costs after hundreds of thousands of people were left without power last week as strong storms struck Aug. 10 in parts of Illinois.

Through Aug. 28, renters can apply for a grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program if they lost income due to the coronavirus pandemic, whether they lost their jobs or had their hours reduced.

To be eligible, renters must have earned less than 80 percent of the median income of a four-person household in their area, as calculated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Deadline Extended For Illinois’ Coronavirus Rent Relief Program

Landlords must be willing to work with the IHDA for renters' grant applications to be considered. The IHDA will send $5,000 checks to the landlords of renters whose applications are approved to cover any rent-related debts. Any remaining funds would be put toward future rent payments in 2020, officials have said.

Renters in Illinois can get help with their applications from 62 community and outreach organizations chosen by state officials to assist applicants through the process.
