Pritzker Extends IL Eviction Ban Another 30 Days Due To Pandemic

Over 100,000 tenants and homeowners applied for rent and mortgage grants, but the state can only help about 40,000, Gov. Pritzker said.

ILLINOIS — Landlords will be barred from evicting their tenants until at least mid-October after Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Wednesday he is extending Illinois’ eviction moratorium for another 30 days.

Pritzker’s prior extension was set to expire Tuesday. The state’s moratorium now runs through Oct. 22.

“Here in Illinois, we will use every legal tool at our disposal to keep people safe and healthy, and employed and housed,” Pritzker said Wednesday.

Pritzker warned “counties and cities across America are facing massive service cuts” that could lead to large layoffs and a drop in the level of services for residents.

“That will deepen our economic recession and cause pain for all Americans,” Pritzker said, adding he and other officials will continue to put pressure on federal leaders to provide more assistance to states amid the pandemic.

“The need here in Illinois and across the nation is tremendous,” Pritzker said.
