ILLINOIS — As the sun sets on another beautiful, albeit warmer and rainier than usual, summer, Illinoisans have crisp weather, colorful foliage and more outdoor activities to look forward to this fall.

Many farms around the Chicago area are welcoming locals and visitors who make the trek out to pick pumpkins, collect apples and stock up on all things autumn. It's almost like a rite of passage for the season.

To help with the search as residents prepare their fall calendars, Patch has compiled a list of the best patches in and around the Chicago area.

Kroll's Fall Harvest Farm

  • Address: 13236 W. Town Line Road in Waukegan
  • Season: Sept. 20 through Oct. 31
  • Attractions: Hayride, corn maze (this year's theme yet to be announced), petting zoo, pumpkin patch
  • Hours of operation: 1-7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • Admission: Admission costs $14 for adults and $12 for children ages 3-12 on weekends. Weekday activities range between $4-$11. Entrance to the corn maze is $8 for adults and $6 for children.

Didier Farms

  • Address: 16678 W. Aptakisic Road in Lincolnshire
  • Season: Sept. 18 through Oct. 26
  • Attractions: Animal Land Zoo, Corny Corn Maze, camel rides, agriculture rides, pumpkin playland, kids activities, bake shop, concessions. Horse-drawn wagon rides, draft horse rides and silly string are available only on weekends.
  • Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Monday; closed Tuesday.
  • Cost: There is no admission fee. All attractions and rides require seven or fewer tickets, each costing $1.

Goebbert's Farm and Garden Center - South Barrington

  • Address: 40 W. Higgins Road in South Barrington
  • Season: Sept. 6 through Oct. 31
  • Attractions: Animal Land, corn stalk maze, duck derby, pony rides, giraffe barn, camel rides, wagon rides, magic show, jumping pillow, pig races, corn box, gem mining and more.
  • Hours of operation: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Halloween hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Cost: Weekday entry to the fall festival is $19, and weekend entry is $26 at the gate or $23 online.

Goebbert's Pumpkin Patch & Apple Orchard - Pingree Grove/Hampshire

  • Address: 42W813 Reinking Road in Pingree Grove
  • Season: Aug. 22 through Oct. 31
  • Attractions: Haunted house, kiddie playland, giant pumpkin slide, tire mountain, pumpkin cannon, straw maze, jumping pillow, corn box, pig races and more.
  • Hours of operation: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
  • Cost: General admission tickets to the fall festival cost $20 per person on weekdays and $27 per person on weekends in September. In October, weekend entry increases to $30. Admission for children 2 and under is free. Season passes cost $60 per person on weekdays and $99 for all days.

Stade's Farm & Market

  • Address: 3709 Miller Road in McHenry
  • Season: Aug. 30 through Oct. 26
  • Attractions: Apple cannons, barn and playhouse, climbing web, corn maze, duck races, petting zoo, pumpkin cannon, slide mountain, tractor pull, zipline and more.
  • Hours of operation: Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Cost: General admission prices vary depending on when you visit. A season pass costs $55. Children ages 2 and under are admitted for free.

Kuiper's Family Farm

  • Address: 1N318 Watson Road in Maple Park
  • Season: Aug. 23 through Nov. 26
  • Attractions: Tractor train, corn maze, pig races, jumping pillow, corn box, tractor tire mountain, pedal tractor derby, haunted forest, hayride, farm animals and more.
  • Hours of operation: Hours vary by day.
  • Cost: September and November prices are $20.99 per person on weekdays and $23.99 on weekends. In October, weekdays cost $23.99 per person on weekdays and $26.99 per person. Admission for military personnel with ID and seniors 65 and older, available only at the gate, is $11.99. Free for kids age 2 and younger.

Richardson Adventure Farm

  • Address: 909 English Prairie Road in Spring Grove
  • Season: Sept. 6 through Oct. 26
  • Attractions: A 28-acre corn maze, 50-foot observation tower, wagon ride, train ride, carousel, slide, zip line, petting zoo, pig race, goat feeding area, jumping pillow, zip line, zorbing, eXtreme Air, gemstone mining, paintball shooting gallery.
  • Hours of operation: In September, closed Monday through Thursday and open 3-11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. In October, hours extend to 3-9 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday.
  • Cost: Prices vary by event.

Abbey Farms

  • Address: 2855 Hart Road in Aurora
  • Season: Sept. 20 to Oct. 30
  • Attractions: 40-acre corn maze, balance beam course, bouncing cow train, zip lines, tractor tire hill, jumping pillow, pedal track, tractor/hay wagon ride, antique tractors and petting zoo.
  • Hours of operation: In September, hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. In October, they extend to include 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • Cost: General admission costs $17 on weekdays and $21 on weekends if purchased online. Prices increase by $2 at the door.

Siegel's Cottonwood Farm

  • Address: 17250 Weber Road in Lockport
  • Season: Sept. 20 through Nov. 2
  • Attractions: Famous 10-acre corn maze, slides, straw mountain, climbing web, corn box, tractor ride, farm animals and more.
  • Hours of operation: Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Cost: Admission is $19.95 weekdays and $29.95 weekends. A weekend combo pass is $32.95, and an all-inclusive weekend pass costs $41.95. Free admission for military/veterans, police and fire with ID.

Bengtson's Farm

  • Address: 13341 W. 151st St. in Homer Glen
  • Season: Sept. 5 to Nov. 2
  • Attractions: Tractor Town, Happy Swing, chicken truck, mega slide, cow coaster, free selfie booth, gemstone and arrowhead mining, pony rides, petting zoo, haunted barn and fun barn.
  • Hours of operation: Open 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • Cost: Admission ranges from $24-39 depending on the day and time.

Johansen's Farm

  • Address: 710 W. Boughton Road in Bolingbrook
  • Season: Sept. 14 through Oct. 31
  • Attractions: Petting zoo, mini golf course, pony rides, hayrides, train rides, slides, corn maze, toddler area.
  • Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for the zoo and rides, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the fall market, bakery and pumpkin patch.
  • Cost: Entrance to the market area, pumpkin patch and bakery is free. The admission for the zoo and activities costs $17.95 on weekdays in September and October, while weekends cost $21.95 in September and $24.95 in October.

Heap's Giant Pumpkin Farm

  • Address: 4853 U.S. Highway 52 in Minooka
  • Season: Sept. 6 through Oct. 31
  • Attractions: Hayrides, pumpkin patch, flashlight maze, giant farm slide, bean maze, farm animals, haunted corn maze, moonlight hayrides and bean maze.
  • Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. Closes at 2:30 p.m. on Halloween.
  • Cost: Weekday admission for people ages 3 and up is $9 per person, while weekend admission is $14 per person. The price includes access to all mazes, playgrounds, hayrides and the U-pick pumpkin patch. Costs vary for the flashlight maze, haunted corn maze and moonlight hayrides.

Dollinger Family Farm

  • Address: 7420 E. Hansel Road in Channahon
  • Season: Sept. 15 through Oct. 30
  • Attractions: Corn maze, play areas, farm animals, bee barn, corn bin, train rides, hay rides, face painting (some activities only available on weekends).
  • Hours of operation: Farm is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Cost: Admission is free, but some activities cost.

Konow's Corn Maze

  • Address: 16849 S. Cedar Road, Homer Glen
  • Season: Starting Sept. 20
  • Attractions: Corn maze, animal barn, indoor playland, jumping pillows, straw playground, cow train express, hay rides, pony rides, indoor Western town, climbing webs.
  • Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 3-8 p.m. Tuesday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday
  • Cost: $15 Monday through Friday and $20 Saturday and Sunday. Active military personnel, veterans and children 2 and younger enter for free. Reservations are not required, and advance-purchased tickets are not available. Admission is free for veterans and military personnel with ID.

Keller's Farmstand

  • Address: 2500 Johnson Road in Oswego
  • Season: Sept. 6 through Oct. 26
  • Attractions: 8-acre corn maze ("Bats in the Bell Tower" is the theme), tranquility labyrinths, tire stacks, farm animals, playhouse with slippery slide, rope and brick mazes, apple orchard, pumpkin patches, fresh produce, fall garden decor.
  • Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
  • Cost: $13.95 per person for everyone 5 and older if purchased online. Prices increase $2 if purchased at the door. Cost does not include apple or pumpkin picking.

  • Attractions: A place to buy pumpkins, where proceeds benefit Christ Church's upcoming youth service trip to Appalachia.
  • Hours of operation: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, noon to 3 p.m. Sunday and noon to 6 p.m. weekdays
