Snow, Freezing Rain This Weekend Before Bitter Cold For Chicago Area

Several rounds of wintry precipitation are possible throughout the weekend.

ILLINOIS — A snowy weekend is in store, as several rounds of wintry precipitation, including snow and freezing drizzle, are possible, according to the National Weather Service.

First up will be a "burst" of snow on Friday evening, generally from 5 to 11 p.m. The weather service said the snow may fall heavy for a time, resulting in quick accumulations on roads. The highest snow amounts will be fore areas near Waukegan and Elgin.

Another wave of snow, as well as freezing rain or drizzle, is possible late Friday night into Saturday morning.

"Wet snow is expected initially with this second round of precipitation before a wintry mix including freezing rain spreads into locations near and south of Interstate 80," the weather service said.

Additional snow accumulations of an inch or two are possible, especially to the north.

Starting Sunday night, bitterly cold temperatures start to move into the area, the weather service said. The high on Sunday is 30, the high on Monday is 10 degrees and the high on Tuesday is 13.

Wind chills of 25 below zero are possible on Sunday night and Monday night, and sub-zero wind chills are also expected through the day on Monday and Tuesday, according to the weather service.
