A family Thanksgiving went awry when police say a man attacked relatives with a box cutter before grabbing a child, who had to be rescued.

A father and son were both killed in a crash on Thanksgiving Day, and police in another suburb fatally shot a man they say was menacing assisted living residents with a chainsaw.

A shirtless male with a chainsaw tried to cut down a tree on the assisted living facility property, then confronted residents with the chainsaw, police said. The facility called the suspect "an unauthorized person," saying he "briefly entered our community" before fast-acting officers responded.

Police found the 42-year-old woman with a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The shooting remains under investigation.
