Torrential Rainfall Possible With Storms, Flood Watch Issued For Chicago Area

The strongest storms may also produce damaging winds up to 60 mph.

ILLINOIS — Thunderstorms are expected across the area, with torrential rainfall possible with the strongest storms, according to the National Weather Service.

DuPage, Cook and Will counties are under a flood watch through Tuesday evening, and a flood advisory has been issued in Cook and Will counties until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.


According to the flood watch, flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible Tuesday.

"Showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening. Atmospheric conditions are favorable for rainfall rates up to 1-2 inches per hour," the weather service said.

According to the issued flood advisory, at 2:31 p.m. Wednesday, doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Rain gauges indicate rainfall rates up to 3 inches per hour with storms near Frankfort, Mokena and Orland Park.
