Rain Possible As Warm Temps Continue In Chicago Area

The weather service said 2024 is on pace for near-record warmth.

ILLINOIS — Although we're approaching the end of October, mild temperatures are expected to continue this week, with a high of 83 expected on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm until a cold front on Tuesday brings "more fall-like" temperatures by mid-week, the weather service said.

Tuesday will have a high of 76, Wednesday has a high of 70, Thursday has a high of 67 and Friday a high of 71.

"A couple of breezy days are then in store for [Tuesday] and Wednesday, possibly a few light showers [Tuesday]," the weather service said on its Facebook.

2024 is on pace for near-record warmth, according to the National Weather Service. Through Sept. 30, the average temperature for the year ranks as the third-warmest on record for both Chicago and Rockford.

Only 1921 and 2012 had warmer years in the first nine months of the year.

The weather service said that both Chicago and Rockford are running above average for October, and expect that this month will keep both cities on pace for near-record warmth for 2024.

As far as records go, Chicago is expected to break the record number of 70-degree days in a year sometime this week, the weather service said. The record for 80+ degree days will likely not be broken this year.

"Given the expected mild pattern for the next couple of weeks, the record number of 60+ [degree] days could be in jeopardy too," the weather service said. Chicago has had 201 60+ degree days this year, and the record is 212, set in 1977.
