What Counts As Upper Middle Class In IL? See Income Ranking
GOBankingRates used data from the 2023 American Community Survey to determine what constitutes an upper middle class income in each state.
ILLINOIS — Illinois falls among the states that have some of the nation’s highest thresholds for what’s considered an upper middle class income, according to a recent ranking from GOBankingRates.

The Prairie State came in at 34th on the list. With a median household income of $81,702, Illinoisans must earn at least $127,093 and no more than $163,404 to be considered upper middle class, according to the ranking.

Illinois fell between Delaware at 35th and Oregon at 33rd in the ranking. In those states, the minimum income considered to be upper middle class is $128,887 and $125,108, respectively.
Maryland has the highest upper middle class income threshold, with a minimum of $158,126, while Mississippi has the lowest at $85,424, according to the ranking.
