Woman Shot In Possible Road Rage Shooting On I-55: State Police

The woman was in critical condition after the Thursday night shooting. COPA said an off-duty officer was involved in the shooting.

CHICAGO, IL — Illinois State Police said a woman in her 20s was in critical condition after she was shot in the head in a possible road rage shooting along I-55 late Thursday night.

Troopers responded to the shooting at 10:07 p.m. on northbound I-55 near Archer Avenue. Police said the woman sustained life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

All lanes of northbound I-55 near Archer were closed for several hours, reopening just before 3:30 a.m., police said.

In a tweet, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) said it was responding to an "off-duty officer-involved shooting" at I-55 and Archer. According to NBC Chicago, authorities said an off-duty officer called the incident in, but it was not clear whether the officer was involved in the shooting or just witnessed it.

State police described the car the wounded woman was in as the"offending" vehicle, ABC Chicago reported.

Late last month, Illinois State Police said the total number expressway shootings in the Chicago area was down 36 percent compared to this time last year.

"The number of non-fatal injury expressway shooting in the Chicago area is down 46 percent and the number of expressway homicides is down 90 percent compared to this time last year," police said in a news release.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly said state police were "committing numerous resources to combat what was a rising number of expressway shootings in the Chicago area."
