500 Pounds Of Pet Food Donated To Pantry In Effort To Keep Pets With Families Who Are Struggling Financially

The Animal Humane Advocacy in McHenry County spearheaded the effort.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The Animal Humane Advocacy in McHenry County recently collected and delivered nearly 500 pounds of pet food to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry — an effort that is meant to keep pets in the homes of families that are struggling financially this holiday season, organizers said.

Community supporters of Animal Humane Advocacy, a local nonprofit serving families and pets throughout McHenry County, helped make the donation possible, according to Paul Barthel, founder and president of Animal Humane Advocacy.

"This initiative helps ensure that families facing financial hardship can continue to care for their pets without being forced to surrender them due to the cost of food," Barthel said. "For many households, pets provide emotional support, companionship, and stability—especially during difficult times. By supplying pet food assistance, we help keep pets in loving homes and reduce strain on local shelters."

Animal Humane Advocacy is continuing to organize food support efforts, affordable vaccination clinics and outreach programs for vulnerable pet owners.

“Something as simple as a bag of pet food can be the difference between a family keeping their beloved companion or losing them,” Barthel said. “We are committed to supporting both people and pets in our community.”
