9 Hospitalized After 6-Vehicle Crash On I-90 In McHenry County

Nine people were transported to the hospital, some with serious injuries, after a six-vehicle crash left one car rolled over and engulfed in flames on Interstate 90 in McHenry County.
The Hampshire Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 6:43 p.m. Saturday to Interstate 90 at the 35.5 mile marker near Marengo for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Fire crews arrived to find a six-vehicle crash with heavy damage, according to Hampshire Fire Chief Trevor Herrmann.
The incident occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 just west of Route 23.

One of the vehicles involved rolled over onto its roof and was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived, Herrmann said.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the second alarm level for ambulances.
The six vehicles were occupied by 11 people. All 11 victims were treated at the scene and nine of them were transported to hospitals.
Ambulances transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Ascension St. Joseph in Elgin and Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital—Riverside in Rockford.
Herrmann said the injuries ranged from minor to serious. Firefighters had to extricate one of the victims from their vehicle.
Ambulances from the Pingree Grove, Genoa-Kingston, Huntley, West Dundee, Elgin, Rutland Dundee, Algonquin and Carpentersville fire departments responded.
The Burlington, Marengo, Sycamore and Fox River fire departments also assisted at the scene.
The Hampshire Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police around 8:40 p.m., just two hours after the first crash, responded to a second crash on westbound Interstate 90 at the 36 mile marker.
The crash involved four vehicles, which sustained moderate damage, Herrmann said.
Herrmann said six people were treated at the scene and two additional people refused treatment.
The Burlington, Geona-Kingston, Pingree Grove and Marengo fire districts responded to assist.
The Illinois State Police are investigating the cause of both crashes.
