Algonquin Ends Electric Aggregation Program Next Month

The village's current fixed electricity rates will be no more as of July 1.

ALGONQUIN, IL - The village's current fixed electricity rates will be no more as of July 1.

The Algonquin electrical aggregation program through the village's consortium, NIGEAC, is set to expire that day, after officials were unable to secure rates guaranteed to be cheaper than those of ComEd.

"The village will monitor the market and may re-establish the program, should rates turn more favorable in the future," officials said in a community alert. "Currently participating ratepayers will receive a confirmation letter from ComEd in June, notifying them of the return to ComEd supply."

Residents do not need to take any action, the notice says, and will automatically be moved back to ComEd at their meter read date in July. The switch will be reflected on ComEd bills received in August.

Additionally, residents may notice an increase in electric company solicitations in light of the program's suspension.

"When considering any solicitations, residents are strongly advised to avoid any monthly fees (that may be added to a fixed supply rate), early termination fees, and variable rates, which may float with no upward cap," Algonquin officials said.

Residents should also never provide their ComEd account numbers to solicitors unless they've contacted them directly to enroll, and/or residents have reviewed all program terms and conditions.
