Algonquin, LITH Primary Election Guide: What You Need To Know

Voters in Crystal Lake and Cary will head to the polls to make their picks in this year's primary races.

CRYSTAL LAKE AND CARY, IL — Voters will head to the polls Tuesday to make their selections in this year's primary races.

McHenry County voters will select their candidates for statewide races as well as some contested local races. Voters will also sound of a mental health referendum, which could come with a sales tax hike. If approved, McHenry County would change the funding source for the county's Mental Health Board — a move that would lower the property tax levy.

If voters approve the measure, the Mental Health Board will no longer be funded by a property tax levy. That levy most recently totaled $10.975 million.

If the referendum is approved, the levy would be nixed on Nov. 30.

And the new sales tax would begin on July 1, according to county officials.The change would mean shoppers in McHenry County would pay an additional 25 cents in sales tax for every $100 spent at retail stores.
