Charges Filed After Woman Beaten In Homophobic Attack: Reports

Kady Grass says she was attacked while at the McDonald's in Carpentersville this past week.

CARPENTERSVILLE, IL — Charges have been filed against two teens accused of brutally attacking a young woman inside the McDonald's in Carpentersville because of her sexual orientation, authorities said.

Kady Grass, 19, is recovering from the attack that left her bruised and battered and her eyes swollen after an argument that started over derogatory comments regarding her sexuality quickly escalated.

Grass was in Carpentersville on May 13, attending her 13-year-old cousin's middle school concert. The duo went to the McDonald's, at 1660 South Kennedy Drive in Carpentersville, after.

While there, she was attacked by a 19-year-old Elgin man and a 17-year-old boy, police said.

"One hit me in the jaw and one was hitting me in the front, and I didn't realize I was getting hit from behind until a little bit after, like it took me awhile to realize. I was unconscious when they were stomping on my head so I don't remember that part, but my 13-year-old cousin does," she told NBC Chicago in an interview.

Grass sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Photos shared on a GoFundMe, which has been set up to bring in funds for Grass, show the extent of injuries to her face, head and body. As of Tuesday, more than $4,700 has been raised through the GoFundMe.

Grass has been released from the hospital and physically, will be OK, family members have reported on social media.

"She walked away with a broken nose and her face almost crushed in but don't think for a second she didn't walk away with her pride still intact. We are so proud of who she is and what she is and how strong she is...for always standing up for herself and being proud of who she is. This is so sad that there is still ignorance in the world like this," one family member wrote in a Facebook post this past week.

Meanwhile, one of the accused attackers, John Kammrad, 19, of the 900 block of Hillcrest Drive in Elgin, has been charged with aggravated battery great bodily harm, aggravated battery in a public place, mob action and disturbing the peace.

Kammrad remains in custody at the Kane County Jail, Kevin Stankowitz, deputy chief of police with the Carpentersville Police Department, told Patch Tuesday.

The other alleged attacker, a 17-year-old boy, turned himself in on May 16, according to police.

Police worked with the Kane County State's Attorney's Office to see if any hate crime charges were warranted in the case.

"...after reviewing the case facts, they declined to charge that," Stankowitz said Tuesday.

Grass and other community members are sounding off on the attack. Grass have been sharing updates on the Carpentersville Community Facebook page, which was started by her grandpa, and community members have also been checking in with her.

"My grandfather favored me and if he was alive to see that this happened to me, he would be absolutely outraged," she wrote in recent days.

Police this past week said local authorities are "committed to ensuring public safety and promoting respect for all individuals.

"This incident underscores the importance of addressing violence and discrimination within our community," police said in a news release.
