Huntley Man Killed, Woman Injured After ATV Hits Mailbox, Tree: Police

Elpidio Marcelo, 24, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, and a Wisconsin woman remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

HUNTLEY, IL — A 24-year-old Huntley man was killed after the ATV he was operating left the roadway and struck a mailbox and then a tree on Monday in unincorporated Rutland Township, police said Tuesday.

Elpidio Marcelo was pronounced dead at a local hospital after the accident, which took place at 12:45 a.m. on Monday, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office announced. Police said that Marcelo was on the ATV with a 21-year-old Kenosha, Wis., woman, and was traveling north on Ridgefield Road when the vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason.

After hitting the mailbox, police said that the vehicle kept traveling north and struck a tree on the property. Both Marcelo and the woman were taken to the hospital for injuries. Police have not released the identity of the woman.

The woman remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said that neither person was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol factored into the accident, which remains under investigation.
