LITH Triathlon Faces Cancellation Amid 5 Years Of Revenue Loss

The village has seen a financial hit after a village employee, who used to plan the event, retired.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — A triathlon formerly planned by a now-retired parks and recreation director has been costing the village of Lake in the Hills thousands of dollars since her retirement and faces cancellation amid low participation numbers.

Trudy Wakeman, a professional triathlete, handled the planning of the event for years and during that time, the village made a profit—village documents show the Lake in the Hills Triathlon more than $4,000 in 2013, according to a Shaw Media report. After Wakeman retired, the village hired a new race director. If the village sticks with that contract, the triathlon could cost the village $9,000 in 2022.

Last week, the village's parks and recreation board voted to begin a search for a new race contractor, according to Shaw Media. The triathlon was not held in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic and a new race organizer would need to be in place by the end of the year to allow for enough time to plan the June event.
