Police have said the home invasion is a "highly unusual" event in a "very safe" community. The attack happened at a Sleepy Hollow home Monday in the 900 block of Saratoga Parkway, Police Chief James Linane told the Daily Herald. Linane said a 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and stabbed before the man stabbed her 17-year-old brother, who came to her defense, according to the news report.
The teens reportedly did not know the suspect. Linane said the teens suffered substantial injuries but were able to escape, and the man entered another nearby home where he confronted two residents, according to the Daily Herald.

One of the residents of the home, Michele Riedl, told police she tried to defuse the situation while the suspect held her at knife point and wanted to get her into a car. Riedl also told police the man told her he was insane before letting her go and walking through the yards, looking like he was going to stab her dog, the Daily Herald reported. Linane said the siblings in the attack were able to get help from their neighbors, who called 911 around 12:35 p.m., and were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin before the boy was airlifted to another location, the Daily Herald reported.
According to the Daily Herald, Linane said the suspect escaped the neighbor's home without injuring them. He was armed with two butcher knives when authorities used a Taser to apprehend him near Randall Road and Carrington Drive. Police said the suspect has been identified and is in custody, however he has not yet been charged. According to the Daily Herald, police said the man lives locally and appears to be in his 20s or 30s, but his motive for attacking the teens is unknown.
