Man Who Caused Fatal Boat Crash Convicted Of 3rd DUI

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A Wonder Lake man who spent 10 years in prison for operating a boat while intoxicated and causing a crash that killed a 21-year-old woman in 2008 has been convicted again for driving while under the influence.

Rick McGuire could face up to seven years in prison when he is sentenced on May 22 in McHenry County Circuit Court on an aggrieved driving under the influence charge.

The charge stems from a May 28, 2022, incident where a deputy found McGuire in his vehicle after it crashed into a fence at a home in Wonder Lake.

The deputy turned on his emergency lights and began to approach the car when the vehicle backed up and crashed into the fence again, according to a news release from the state's attorney's office. The driver, who was later identified as McGuire, did the same thing five times before the deputy was able to get McGuire's attention.

The deputy noticed the smell of alcohol and McGuire was taken to the hospital where test revealed he had a .3 blood alcohol concentration, which is nearly four times the legal limit of .08, according to a news release.

McGuire has a prior DUI from 1989 and was previously convicted in a fatal operating a
watercraft under the influence of alcohol case in 2008. A jury found McGuire guilty of driving a boat on Wonder Lake, crashing into another boat and killing its passenger, 21-year-old Nicole Jurgens, and he was sentenced to 10 years in prio
