Man Who Opened Fire on Police Officers Found Guilty on 15 Counts

Scott Peters was found guilty on attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm.

Scott Peters, 52, of Holiday Hills was found guilty Wednesday of seven counts of attempted first degree murder of a peace officer, three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm to a peace officer and five counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm to a peace officer, the McHenry County State’s Attorney said in a written release.

“The evidence presented at trial showed that on October 16, 2014 Deputies Maness, Satkiewicz and Luna of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to 1313 West Northeast Shore Drive in Holiday Hills for a welfare check,” the written release states. “Upon arrival Deputies (Dwight) Maness and (Khalia) Satkiewicz spoke to the homeowner, Peters, who refused to allow them in the residence and then fired 12 rounds from an AR-15 assault rifle through his front door.”

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that it took jurors less than two hours to convict Peters.

“The injured officers, Dwight Maness and Khalia Satkiewicz, held hands and said they were thankful for the verdict and the community’s outpouring of support,” The Tribune reported. “Maness was shot in the back and the leg by Peters and has watched the trial from his wheelchair. Satkiewicz was shot in the leg, and another bullet struck her protective vest.

Neither officer has yet been able to return to work. Peters also exchanged gunfire that night with a third officer, Eric Luna, who was not injured, the Tribune reported.
