How do you know the school hero you’re nominating?

Best friends for over 60 years.

What should your community know about this person?

My dear friend has been a custodian in the Blue Island district for over 20 years. Her dedication to the job is amazing. Lois was a stay-at-home mom for 25 years and, due to life circumstances, entered the workforce at 45. Every day she approaches her responsibilities with dedication and professionalism — and with a smile. Whether she’s keeping bathrooms and hallways clean or ensuring everything is well-stocked and sanitized, she takes pride in the work. Lois opens the school every morning at 5:30 a.m. and walks to work in rain, snow and now extreme heat.

What sets Lois apart is the heartbreak she has endured and the grace with which she carries it ... Custodial work is behind the scenes, but Lois has always been proud to serve her community and its children, making sure everything runs smoothly and creating a cleaner, better place to focus on learning. I truly believe teachers and staff shape our children’s futures, and I also know Lois makes everyone’s day a little easier with her smile and positive energy. She never complains about carrying 25 boxes of hardcover books through the school or 50 boxes of copy paper from the dock to the offices. I wholeheartedly commend Lois Lundquist for her dedication and believe she deserves recognition for all she does and continues to do.

What three words best describe the school hero?
