The second installment of 2022 arrived with a $909 million increase in property tax for Cook County. Now were at 17.6 billion from 16.7 billion according to the Cook County Treasurer.
They blame school funding and local governments. Maria Pappas stated there are 900 Governments in Cook County and 672 raised taxes.
The more people leave Cook County the more property taxpayers must make up the loss revenue. Zillow.com reports that 305,000 homes were sold in Indiana in 2022. The Daily Herald Newspaper reported that 35,741 were sold in Illinois in 2022.
Total Cook County budget for 2023 is $16.8 billion dollars. Suburban property taxpayers were billed $10 billion dollars. Chicago taxpayers $6.8 billion dollars. Cook County Hospital System receives $4 billion of the $16.8 billion dollars. It will be interesting to see the 2024 Cook County Budget.
If it wasn’t for interest rates being at 8% for mortgages many more people would have moved out of Cook County and Illinois.
