Presentation Explores South Chicagoland's Historic Stops On Underground Railroad
Free presentation highlights southland's ties to the National Journey Toward Freedom, Nov. 16 at St. Peter Claver Church in Robbins.
ROBBINS, IL — Despite slavery being outlawed in many northern states, the path to freedom for formerly enslaved people remained fraught with danger. Freedom seekers and free Black individuals in the North often faced violence, intimidation, imprisonment, and the constant threat of (re)enslavement. The Underground Railroad — a courageous, secret network — helped guide many to safety, relying on trust, strategy, and resilience.
While the Underground Railroad is widely known for its impact in the eastern and southern United States, its rich history in Illinois and the South Chicagoland region remains less celebrated.
A special event aims to change that. On Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m., the public is invited to “The Underground Railroad in South Chicagoland,” a free presentation exploring this vital part of local history. The event will be held at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 14139 Claire Blvd., Robbins, Illinois.

Sponsored by the Midwest Underground Railroad Network, the event will feature Dr. Larry McClellan, noted historian and author. Dr. McClellan, will highlight documented Underground Railroad routes and safe havens throughout the region — including historical sites located in Robbins itself.
“Many people are surprised to learn that their own neighborhoods played a role in this critical movement for freedom,” said event organizer Tom Shepherd. “We hope this presentation will spark reflection, dialogue, and greater appreciation for the people who risked everything to help others find liberty.”
