Bringing Back the Past in Arlington Heights: 10 N. Dunton Since 1856

Over the last 157 years, six business have been located on the property at 10 N. Dunton Street. Take a trip back in time and learn what was previously located at the property.

The Landmeier building at 10 N. Dunton Street - where Mitchell's Jewelers is today - has been in existence in downtown Arlington Heights for roughly 135 years.

The property itself has had businesses located on it since 1856.

The first business that opened its doors there was called Downs Store, which was a general store that sold everything from flour, to material to make clothing, to coffee and food items, and was in business until 1865.

Then, Olmsted General Store moved into the location in mid 1860's, and in the late 1870's, the building that stands on the property today, was built.

Olmsted remained there until 1886.

F.E. Davis was a clerk while Olmsted's was still in business, and worked his way up to manager. He ended up opening another grocery store in the same location - his namesake - from the late 1890's until 1923.

When F.E. Davis closed its doors, The Emerald Shop opened them, which remained in the building from the mid 1920's until the 1960's, and sold a variety of "ladies wares".

Lilyan's took over in the mid 1960's, selling similar ladies items as the Emerald Shop did until 1984, when 7th generation jeweler, Mitchell's Jewelers, moved into the building.
