Arlington Heights Crime Alert: Utility Boxes Defaced, Candy Thief at Marathon Station

Arlington Heights report crime alerts on a weekly basis and ask for the public's help in reporting tips to solve cases.

Criminal Defacement of Property

Three utility boxes have been defaced with black spray paint over the last week with the words, “CReeR” or “CREER” in the village. The first incident was discovered August 7 at 7 a.m. at 55 S. Vail Street on the east side of an apartment building. The second was on the northwest corner of Euclid Avenue and Ridge Avenue on August 9 at 11:50 a.m., and the third on Arlington Heights Road at Hawthorne Street at 1 p.m. on August 12.

A clerk at Marathon Gas Station, 102 W. Northwest Highway, observed an unknown teenager put snack food and candy in her clothing and leaving without paying on August 12 at 3:15 p.m.

Driving Under the Influence

Arlington Heights Police responded to McDonald’s, 1920 N. Arlington Heights Road on August 13 at 2 a.m. for a possible drunk driver in the parking lot. Police observed Steven V. Smith, 40, of the 2000 block of N. Ridge Road, turn out of the parking lot without using a signal. Smith then made another illegal turn and straddled the lane lines. When he was stopped at Palatine Road, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on Smith’s breath and found a clear plastic bag containing Cannabis and a colored glass pipe in his pockets. Smith was arrested for DUI, failure to signal, improper lane usage, possession of Cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. His court date is scheduled for September 24.
