Coronavirus: Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade Canceled

With coronavirus protections expected to last through May, event organizers decided to cancel Arlington Heights' Memorial Day Parade.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Greg Padovani, chairman of the Veterman Memorial Committee of Arlington Heights, announced Wednesday that the village's 101st annual Memorial Day Parade has been canceled due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic. With the virus now projected to peak in mid-May, authorities expect coronavirus protections to remain in effect through the end of May, Padovani said in a mass email announcing the cancellation.

However, this year's Memorial Day ceremony to honor the nation's fallen heroes will be recorded for broadcast and posting on May 25.

"As you know the Memorial Day Ceremony addresses the true reason for Memorial Day, to honor and remember our nation's fallen heroes," Padovani wrote in the email. "In Arlington Heights, we honor and remember Arlington's Fallen Heroes, the 58 young men from our town that died in the service of our nation, from the Civil War to Afghanistan."
