Coronavirus: Costco, Domino's, Mariano's, Jewel Hiring Amid Panic

Grocery companies focus on hiring to keep up with stocking shelves during the coronavirus outbreak.

COOK COUNTY, IL — There's a surge of job openings across the Chicago area as businesses — especially grocery stores — focus on hiring to keep shelves stocked during the coronavirus outbreak and keep up with shoppers "panic buying" and those stocking up on essentials before they hunker down for social distancing.

Jewel, Mariano's and Costco are all hiring.

Mariano's is also looking to fill positions immediately.

At Costco, high demand as buyers are stocking up on toilet paper, milk, eggs and more was urging employees to refer any potential candidates to the store.

"We are currently experiencing a monumental surge in our sales and foot traffic in the warehouse," Costco said in a memo. "In response, we are opening up the seasonal hiring period to help us increase the size of our staff and ease the pressure through this busy period."

The company said hiring would be a fast, one-day process. Info on Costco jobs is available online.

Positions are also open at Domino's Pizza locations across the Chicago area and suburbs, as the company is implementing "no contact" service for employees and customers.

Amazon also said it will be hiring people for 100,000 new full-time and part-time jobs in the U.S. to keep up with online orders as people avoid going out in public.

Services like Uber Eats and DoorDash — which are now offering no-contact food deliveries — could also use some drivers.

CNBC reported Uber is giving away over 300,000 free meals to health-care workers and first responders who are helping combat the coronavirus, and Uber Eats is waiving delivery fees for some small businesses.
