Des Plaines Woman Killed, Others Seriously Injured In 3 Crashes: PD

Police say Madonna Haptman was killed after the vehicle she was riding in swerved to avoid a car that ran a red light and struck a house.

DES PLAINES, IL — A 73-year-old Des Plaines woman was killed, and several people suffered serious injuries in three separate traffic crashes over the weekend, police said on Monday.

Madonna Hauptman was killed in an accident on Saturday evening in which the car in which she was riding swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle that ran a red light, police said. The accident took place at 5:47 p.m. on Dempster Street and Mt. Prospect Road, where the driver of the vehicle Hauptman was in swerved to hit the vehicle that ran the red light and struck a house in the 800 block of Mt. Prospect Road.

No one inside the home was injured but the driver of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital for their injuries. Police said that Ryan Blatz, 28, Mt. Prospect, was issued three citations as a result of the crash. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 12.

In a separate incident, a 50-year-old Des Plaines man was seriously injured when he struck a Pace bus while on his bicycle to avoid hitting another vehicle, police said.

Edgar Soriano Aguilar was injured in the crash, which took place at 5:42 p.m. on Saturday in the 1100 block of East Touhy Avenue. Police said he was riding his bicycle west on Touhy when he swerved to avoid a vehicle and struck a Pace bus traveling in the same direction.

He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

On Sunday evening, a 40-year-old Addison man was injured when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on River Road.

Marek Bardo was attempting to pass a Silverado truck while approaching the traffic signal at Central Avenue when he struck the truck, which had slowed down for the red light, police said. Bardo lost control of his motorcycle after hitting the back of the truck and sustained serious injuries.

Police said that witnesses said they saw Bardo traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically before the accident took place.
