Ex-D211 Cashier Stole More Than $80K From District: Prosecutors

An internal investigation into the alleged wrongdoing was sparked after the employee took a sick day.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — A former Township High School District 211 cashier is accused of stealing more than $80,000 from the school system between 2014 and 2017. Denise Bazsali, 54, of Schaumburg, was charged with theft following an investigation by Hoffman Estates police, according to the Daily Herald. A judge ordered her held on $75,000 bond and placed her on house arrest during a hearing Friday, the report added.

According to prosecutors, officials began an internal investigation into Bazsali's work with district after finding she hadn't entered two payments for $150, the report stated. The payments were discovered in her desk by a co-worker while Bazsali was out during a sick day in September, the report added.

Officials then found $4,500 in transactions under her login and password, and Bazsali, who has no criminal record, resigned as cashier, the report stated. Prosecutors said the district's internal investigation eventually revealed that $82,125 from 200 transactions had been deposited into accounts in the names of Bazsali, her husband and her daughter between March 2014 to September 2017, the report added.

A district spokesman told the Herald that Hoffman Estates police conducted their own investigation and that Bazsali's access to the school system's finances was cut off once officials suspected any alleged wrongdoing. Officials don't believe "any student information or credit information was compromised," the spokesman told the Herald.
