Make sure you and your kids are safe this Halloween. The Arlington Heights Police Department offers some tips on the best way to enjoy trick-or-treating this year:
- Use reflective tape, glow sticks and flashlights so kids and their costumes are visible at night.
- Stay in familiar neighborhoods, and only visit homes that have their outside lights on.
- Only accept candy at the door. Never go inside the home.
- Always trick or treat in groups. Never go alone.
- Throw away non-factory packaged treats, such as loose popcorn and fruit. Also throw away any treats that have loose or torn wrappers.
- Don't trick-and-eat and snack on treats you receive before you get home. Treats shouldn't be eaten until you're at home, and they've been thoroughly examined to be safe by a parent, guardian or trusted adult.
