Krishnamoorthi, Dargis Projected Winners In IL 8th District Primary

Incumbent Raja Krishnamoorthi faced a challenger on the Democratic side. Republicans made a choice among five.

ILLINOIS — Democratic incumbent Raja Krishnamoorthi was seeking his party's nomination for a fourth term in the U.S. House of Representative Tuesday night, representing Illinois' 8th Congressional District.

With about 95 percent of expected votes in, Krishnamoorthi was well on his way to victory, having received 28,058 votes (70.5 percent), as of 11 p.m., according to Chicago Tribune. Challenger Junaid Ahmed was looking at 11,758 votes (29.5 percent). NBC News projected Krishnamoorth the winner.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, a field of five candidates were seeking the Republican nod to face Krishnamoorth in November's general election. Mohammed Faheem is running as an independent for the two-year seat.

With about 85 percent of the expected vote accounted for, Chris Dargis was in the top spot having received 10,783 votes (31.8 percent) there, according to Chicago Tribune. Phillip Wood was next with 6,407 votes (18.9 percent), followed by Peter Kopsaftis with 5,983 votes (17.7 percent), Karen Kolodziej with 5,901 votes (17.4 percent) ad Chad Koppie with 4,808 votes (14.2 percent).

Associated Press projected Dargis the winner.

As of 11 p.m., NBC News had called 14 of 16 House races on the Democratic side, and just nine of 16 for the Republicans.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. in Illinois. All election results are unofficial. Karen A. Yarbrough, of the Cook County Clerk's Office, is overseeing the vote tabulations.

Since 2017, Krishnamoorthi has represented the 8th District. The congressional district covers parts of Cook County, DuPage County and Kane County. All or parts of Addison, Barrington Hills, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Elgin, Elk Grove Village, Glendale Heights, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Lombard, Palatine, Roselle, Schaumburg, South Elgin, Streamwood, Villa Park and Wood Dale are included.

The total population of the district is 717,115.

Krishnamoorthi, 48, emigrated with his family to the U.S. from India. He currently serves on the House Oversight Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Krishnamoorthi, of Schaumburg, is also chair of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, and serves as an assistant whip.

Challenging Krishnamoorthi on the Democratic ticket was Ahmed, 45, a small business owner for the last 15 years. Ahmed lives in South Barrington.

Dargis, 51, of Palatine, is a businessman and retired Naval officer and nuclear engineer.

Kolodziej, 58, of Itasca, is a caregiver.

Koppie, 84, of Gilberts, has been a farmer for the past 40 years and is a retired 20-year jet pilot. He has been a member of the Kane County Regional Board of Schools since 2007.

Owen Wood, 59, of Carol Stream, is a pastor and licensed mental health counselor.

Peter Kopsaftis serves on the board of the Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Center in Wheeling. He currently serves as the Barrington Township Republican Committeeman/President, and he has assisted many local elected officials in their campaigns for public office.

Next up, Illinois' general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 8.
