ILLINOIS — With no opponent in Tuesday night's Democratic primary, U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL 5) will be keeping an eye on the Republican side as a familiar opponent faces a challenge from a write-in candidate.

Tom Hanson, who lost to Quigley in 2008, 2018 and 2020, is hoping the fourth time is the charm in November, but he first must defeat a write-in challenge from Frank Rowder.

Quigley, who has been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2009, has no opponent in the primary due to withdrawals and disqualifications. Jerico Matias Cruz, Jonathan Bishop and Dan Wozniczka were all on the ballot at some point before being removed.

"The issue that I hear from my constituents about the most is overwhelmingly crime and gun violence in our communities," Quigley recently told Patch in response to an election questionnaire about what issue is the most pressing for District 5. "The only way we can effectively tackle these issues is to pursue a comprehensive approach to violence prevention."
