Man Charged In Death Of 2 Recent Schaumburg High School Grads: Police

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — An Elgin man faces five felony charges, including two counts of aggravated DUI resulting in the death of another person following a fatal crash that killed two recent high school graduates, and was ordered on $2 million bond on Monday.

Deni Rubio, 32, was charged on Sunday after the crash, which took place at 8:52 a.m. at the intersection of Higgins Road and Barrington Road, Hoffman Estates Police said. The driver of one of the vehicles was identified as Amelia Mazeikis, 18, who was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The passenger in her vehicle was identified as D’Shaun Tudela, also 18, who was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries said.

Rubio was also charged with two counts of reckless homicide and one count of trying to disarm a peace officer. Prosecutors said on Monday that Rubio's car T-boned the car being driven by Mazeikis, which then struck another vehicle.

Police found Rubio near his car following the crash and when officers went to place him into custody, he grabbed an ammunition magazine from one of the officers and tried to grab his gun as well. Prosecutors said that at the time of his arrest, Rubio had a blood-alcohol content of 1.36, which is nearly two times the legal limit.

According to a statement from school officials, the two students had recently graduated together from Schaumburg High School.

“Class of 2023 graduates Amelia Mazeikis and D’Shaun Tudela were individuals with bright futures ahead of them, and this devastating news affects many in our Saxon high school community,” District 211 Supt. Lisa Small in a statement issued by the district “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends, and we also offer our sincere condolences to all Schaumburg High School students, families and staff.”

Go Fund Me efforts have been started by the families of the two teenagers.

“I can’t even express the sadness in my heart for my boy and his beautiful Amelia,” Katrina Tudela wrote on the GoFundMe. “The only thing keeping me together is they are together.”

Katrina Tudela wrote that the two had been dating for three years and said that they were on their way to work when another vehicle ran a red light, causing a three-car collision. Police described the accident as serious on Saturday and wrote in a social media alert that the area would be closed to traffic for several hours.

The family of Amelia Mazeikis wrote that she was a talented artist, gymnast, and animal lover.

Rubio is due back in court on July 7.
