MMA Fighter Accused Of Driving High In Fatal Schaumburg Crash

The Streamwood man is being held on $1.25 million bail stemming from a 3-vehicle accident last week that killed a Schaumburg man.

SCHAUMBURG, IL — A Streamwood mixed martial artist is accused of driving under the influence of drugs leading to a three-vehicle accident in Schaumburg last week that killed a 41-year-old man, according to police. Feroz Q. Khan, 25, was charged with DUI of drugs and aggravated DUI of drugs causing death, Schaumburg police said in a statement Friday.

Khan's bail was set at $1.25 million during a hearing Friday in Rolling Meadows, the Daily Herald reports. He's currently being held at Cook County Jail.

The accident happened Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the 500 block of Schaumburg Road. Khan was driving a 2009 Mercedes west when he hit a Mazada minivan driven by Amando Chavez, of Schaumburg, from behind. The impact sent the minivan into a tree, and Khan's Mercedes also hit a 2015 Acura.

According to authorities, the investigation found that speed and intoxicating substances were contributing factors in the crash. Prosecutors said Friday that Khan had been boating and smoking marijuana at a friend's house in Carpenterville hours before the accident, the Herald reports.

Khan, who competes professionally in mixed martial arts, had a bout set for Sept. 1, but the judge Friday told him to "[f]orget about that," the report stated. Khan's next court date is Sept. 6, and if convicted, he could face up to 14 years in prison.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help Chavez's wife and four children. In two days, the campaign has raised more than $14,000, well past its $5,000 goal.

"Amando was the faithful husband of Alicia, who works at Church of the Holy Spirit [in Schaumburg] and loving and doting father to his four young children," the page states. " His death is a big loss to his family and the community."
