Mount Prospect Man Indicted On Weapons, Drug Charges: Feds

Investigators said Omari Andrews, Jr. trafficked fentanyl and heroin and had an AR-15 rifle and handguns along with drugs in his residence.

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — A 23-year-old Mount Prospect man faces federal drug and weapons charges after being indicted by a federal grand jury, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.

Omari Andrews, Jr. was indicted after federal investigators said that he was trafficking fentanyl and heroin in four suburban communities, including Westmont, Villa Park, Des Plaines, and Hillsdale, federal prosecutors said.

Andrews also had an AR-15 rifle and several handguns in his apartment when federal authorities searched his residence, prosecutors said. Agents also found distribution quantities of fentanyl, heroin, marijuana, and cocaine at his residence, prosecutors announced.

Holding firearm and drug offenders accountable through federal prosecution is a centerpiece of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) – the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction strategy, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in announcing the indictment.

In the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and law enforcement partners have deployed the PSN program to attack a broad range of violent crime issues facing the district.

Andrews is being held in federal custody without bond, officials said. He is due in court on June 20 for arraignment.
