Two men rushed into the blaze Wednesday and helped an elderly man escape the flames.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — Four people, including an elderly man, were saved by neighbors from a burning home Wednesday night in Elk Grove Village. Three of the people were taken to the hospital for observation, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the village said.

The blaze erupted around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the 500 block of Crest Avenue in Elk Grove Village's Brannigar subdivision. Firefighters from the village and surrounding communities were able to put out the fire by around 9 p.m., the village said.

"We especially appreciate our neighboring Departments for their assistance during this incident," the village said in a Facebook post. Brett Tanner, a neighbor who was mowing his lawn at the time, told the Daily Herald that he ran to see if he could help once he saw the flames. Initially, he looked for a hose to douse the fire, but he couldn't find one.

"But it was a fast-moving fire, so then I had to just barge in the house and told everybody to get out," he told the Herald.

Tanner was joined by another neighbor, Jim McEnroe, and they two helped get the residents out of the burning home. The men also had to help an elderly man who lived in the house from his bed to a wheelchair in order to get him out of the blaze, according to the Herald.

Video of the fire showed the flames concentrated around the house's garage.

"The flames and the amount of smoke was unbelievable," Jeanine McEnroe, Jim's wife who called 911 and shot the video, told the Herald.
