Sears To Close More Than 100 Stores By Spring

The Hoffman Estates-based retailer announced another round of Sears and Kmart store closings, including 6 in Illinois.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — Sears Holding Corp. will close more than 100 stores, including more than 50 Kmart locations that the Hoffman Estates-based retailer owns, the company announced Thursday. Employees at affected stores were notified Thursday about the closings, which include 39 Sears outlets and 64 Kmart stores, the financially struggling retailer said in a statement.

This newest round of closings will begin as early as March and extend into April, Sears said. Liquidation sales for some of the soon-to-be-shuttered stores will begin as early as Jan. 12, the company added.

The closings are part of Sears' continuing "strategic assessment" as the company tries to eliminate unprofitable locations. Throughout 2017, the retailer shut down underperforming Sears and Kmart stores as the company say drops in store sales and overall revenue.
