AURORA, IL — A 19-year-old Aurora man faces weapons charges in connection with a shooting that took place at Willowbrook’s Juneteenth celebration earlier this year, officials announced on Friday.

Anthony Mothershed was denied pre-trial release after he appeared in court on Friday after being charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced.

Mothershed was charged in connection with a shooting that took place at 12:24 a.m. on June 18 at a Juneteenth celebration in Willowbrook. Officers were alerted to the fact that gunshots were fired in a strip mall parking lot near Kingery Highway and Honeysuckle Rose Lane.

DuPage County deputies learned that Reginald Meadows, 31, of Willowbrook had been shot and killed and multiple individuals had been shot, a news release said. Following an investigation by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe that Mothershed was with a group of individuals standing outside the Legacy Beauty Supply when he began shooting a Kahr Arms CW45 .45 caliber pistol in the direction of others at the celebration.

Prosecutors allege that Mothershed fled the scene after firing the gun. Mothershed was arrested on Wednesday and will be held until he appears in court.

“The violent conduct alleged against Mr. Mothershed is outrageous and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “A gathering of hundreds of people is no place for illegal guns, and my office stands ready to file the appropriate charges supported by evidence against anyone accused of behavior such as alleged in this case.

The investigation into what turned a peaceful celebration into a deadly shooting continues to be extremely tedious and time-consuming.”

Mothershed is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 23.

An investigation into the matter continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 407-2400.
