31 Coronavirus Deaths In Kane County During 1st Week of December

Coronavirus-related deaths have been surging in Kane County for the past three weeks after large spikes in cases and hospitalizations.

KANE COUNTY, IL — The coronavirus pandemic claimed 31 more lives in Kane County during the first week of December, public health data shows.

That weekly death toll is nearly twice as high as it was over the previous seven-day span (Nov. 24-30), when 16 COVID-19 deaths were recorded, according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Kane County experienced its deadliest week between May 11 and May 17, when 41 deaths were reported. Thirty-four were recorded in Kane County between Nov. 14 and Nov. 20, which was the county’s deadliest week since mid-May.

As of Monday, 464 Kane County residents have died after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to IDPH statistics. More than 56 percent were linked to long-term-care facilities, which have reported 261 total COVID-19 deaths.

Kane County’s seven-day rolling average of deaths — a measure that takes into account daily fluctuations to show longer-term trends — has more than doubled since falling significantly over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

That average dropped from a six-month high of about 4.9 deaths Nov. 20 to just over 2.1 deaths Nov. 28. By Dec. 7, it stood at more than 4.4 deaths, the state’s data shows.

The seven-day rolling average of new coronavirus cases in Kane County is also rising again after a steady Thanksgiving-related decline.

Kane County’s average hit its highest point of the pandemic Nov. 12 — with 595 cases — before falling to about 342 by the end of November.


The county’s average of new cases stood at about 414 cases Monday after public health officials reported 2,899 new coronavirus cases during the first seven days of December.

Kane County recorded 13,565 coronavirus cases in November, by far the most in any month during the pandemic. Seventy-eight Kane County residents died from COVID-19 during November, making it the county’s second-deadliest month.

May remains the county's deadliest month of the pandemic, with 123 deaths from coronavirus-related conditions.

All 102 Illinois counties are under Tier 3 restrictions after public health officials imposed new mitigations Nov. 20 amid a huge surge in new coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

Under Tier 3 restrictions, some non-essential businesses were ordered to close and many stores must enforce stricter capacity limits. Indoor service bans at bars and restaurants remain in effect throughout Illinois.

Any of Illinois’ 11 coronavirus-management regions can move back to Tier 2 restrictions if its positivity rate drops below 12 percent for three days. The region must also have more than 20 percent of hospital beds open and experience a sustained drop in coronavirus-related hospitalizations.

The positivity rate in Region 8 — made up of Kane and DuPage counties — hit an all-time high of 16 percent Nov. 13 before dropping to 12.5 percent Nov. 29, its lowest point in nearly four weeks.

The positivity rate in Region 8 ticked up to 13 percent Friday, the most recent day for which testing data is available.
