Aurora Man Sentenced For Nearly Sawing Man's Arm Off
The drunk man took an argument too far with a knife in December of 2016. He's since been convinced of attempted murder.

AURORA, IL — An Aurora man was sentenced to 22 years in prison Thursday for trying to slash someone to death with a knife. Shaun J. Ramirez, 35, was convicted in August of attempted murder and armed violence. In 2016, a few days before Christmas, Ramirez was talking with the victim outside his home in the 1300 block of North Glen Circle. Intoxicated and on parole, Ramirez punched the victim in the mouth. When he tried to get away, he slashed the victim with a knife. The two wrestled for a bit, then the victim got up and told him the fight was over, walking to a friend’s car. According to a press release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Ramirez ran to the car and stabbed the victim in the face and throat. He then grabbed the man’s right arm and began to saw at it, cutting a large chunk from the bone and leaving a large hole in the arm. The driver of the vehicle managed to get the victim to the hospital where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. Officials say the attack most likely caused permanent damage, including detached tendons.
Ramirez has served at least three prison terms already. Illinois law allows him to put credit for the 308 days he’s already been incarcerated toward the sentence, which will be carried out at the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said, “This was a vicious, chilling and nearly deadly attack. Mr. Ramirez is dangerous and belongs in prison. I hope this victim believes that justice has been served.”
