Charges Filed In 2021 Fatal Shooting Of Aurora Man: Police

AURORA, IL — More than two years after a 29-year-old Aurora man was shot and killed by another person in a passing vehicle, Montgomery police have made an arrest in the case, authorities said on Thursday.

Rodolfo Madrigal was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals on Wednesday after investigative leads led police to the Streator man being linked to the fatal shooting of Andrew Contreras in 2021. Police said that Madrigal was located at the intersection of South Sterling and Livingston in Streator on Wednesday and was taken into custody without incident, Montgomery Police said.

Madrigal was charged in a fatal shooting that took place on Jan. 12, 2021, when police responded to a report of shots fired from a vehicle that was located on Route 30 near Route 31. Police found a male victim who had been shot multiple times and who later died at an area hospital. The man was Contreras, who was remembered as a loving father willing to do anything for his children.

Police said that an unidentified person had fired shots from another vehicle and fled the scene before police arrived.

For nearly two years, the Montgomery Police Department investigated the fatal shooting, pursuing leads that ultimately led to Madrigal's arrest on Wednesday. In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Madrigal faces an attempted murder charge.

Madrigal is being held in the Kane County Jail pending a detention hearing. The case remains open, and the investigation continues as the Montgomery Police Department and other partnering agencies work to determine any additional individuals involved.
