Young is one of several in her family who have represented East Aurora in wrestling–two of her brothers were state champions and state qualifiers in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

But for Young and the 16 East High students also on the Girls Wrestling team, 2022 was the first year in which any could hope to compete and represent District 131 at the state level.

Ryan Mick, Assistant Wrestling Coach at East High, said the opportunity for female students to compete together was exciting and rewarding.

“It felt great having girls represent us on the wrestling mat this year,” Mick said. “When the season started you could tell they were nervous, but as the season went it was awesome to see all the girls come together and really buy into our philosophy. We treat the team as a big family and they all truly get along and enjoy learning and competing together. I’m extremely excited to see the future with these girls as they grow into great wrestlers but even greater people.”

The entire Girls Wrestling team is a testament to the heart of East Aurora athletics–a commitment to building community and self-reliance all while striving to reach each student’s individual potential. We are extremely proud of all the students who competed this year!
