KANE COUNTY, IL — Kane County hit another pandemic milestone Wednesday, breaking the 30,000-case mark as the holiday season gets underway.
Almost 12,000 people in Kane County tested positive for the coronavirus during the first 25 days of November amid a huge surge in cases, according to public health data. That means nearly 40 percent of the county’s 30,350 total cases were recorded over the past three and a half weeks.

Five months passed between the county’s first case and its 10,000th case, which was recorded Aug. 13. Kane County recorded its 20,000th case 12 weeks later on Nov. 5, according to statistics from the Illinois Department of Health.
The county recorded its 30,000th case Nov. 25, less than three weeks after reaching 20,000 cases.

New cases in Kane County grew at record rates between Oct. 27 and Nov. 12, when the county’s seven-day rolling average hit its highest point at 595 cases per day.

Its seven-day rolling average — a measure that accounts for daily fluctuations in testing to show longer-term trends in coronavirus data — dropped to 481 cases by Nov. 25, though that's still 50 percent higher than it was at any point before Oct. 29, the state's data shows.

Before Oct. 28, Kane County had only twice confirmed more than 300 new cases in a single day. It has recorded more than 300 cases on 27 of the 29 days since.
Public health data shows 423 Kane County residents have died from COVID-19, as of Nov. 25. More than half of the county’s deaths — 230 — have been linked to long-term-care facilities.

IDPH director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said she fears there will be a new spike in coronavirus cases and related hospitalizations in about two weeks if people disregard public health guidelines and invite friends and family over for the holiday.

“We don't want anybody’s Thanksgiving dinner to turn in to a COVID-19 superspreader event,” Ezike said. ‘Our goal is to protect and not infect those that we love and care for.
