Kaneland Schools Moving To Online Learning Amid Coronavirus Surge

Over the past two weeks, coronavirus cases have more than doubled within District 302, which includes parts of Aurora and North Aurora.

KANE COUNTY, IL — Kaneland District 302 is set to become one of the first school districts in Kane County to revert to full-time remote learning after a surge in coronavirus cases throughout the region and state.

District 302 schools will move to remote learning Wednesday after the district’s total case count more than doubled in the past two weeks, while the number of students missing class also grew significantly, district officials said in a letter to parents.

With Kaneland schools closing, the district has also postponed all sports and extracurricular activities. Students will attend class Monday and Tuesday, the Kane County Chronicle reports.

District 302 reported have reported 80 total cases since Aug. 20, including 40 new cases last week, according to the district’s coronavirus dashboard. Eighty percent of the district’s total cases have been recorded among students, the dashboard shows.

Nearly two dozen students and employees at Kaneland High School have tested positive since the start of the new school year, and 16 of those cases were active as of last week, the dashboard shows.

An average of nearly 250 students and more than 60 staff members missed school each day last week due to the coronavirus, the dashboard shows.

Officials from the district, which includes parts of Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery, said the decision to move to full-time remote learning was also based on guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health, which expects coronavirus cases to continue to surge after Thanksgiving.

About 85 percent of District 302 families were enrolled in the district’s hybrid learning model that saw them split time between the classroom and online instruction, the Kane County Chronicle reports.

District 302 hopes to restart hybrid learning Jan. 4, with officials to notify families of their plans one week prior, the report states.

Many school districts in Kane County started the 2020-21 school year with remote learning before reopening schools to some students for hybrid learning models. Other districts, like East Aurora District 131, have been operating fully remotely since the coronavirus pandemic started in the spring.
