Man Killed By Police After Fatal Home Invasion ID'd
Russell Novak, 70, was shot to death in his Plano home before police tracked the suspect to Aurora.
AURORA, IL — A week after a 70-year-old man was shot to death in what Plano police called a home invasion, the Kane County Coroner's Office has identified the suspect who was also fatally shot by police.
The Kane County Coroner's Office identified the suspect as Nicholas Novak, 36, of Aurora. He was fatally shot by police after officials say he pointed a gun at a deputy following a pursuit from Plano to Aurora.
Plano Police said they responded to a report of gunshots around 6:45 p.m. Sept. 27 in the 3800 block of Pratt Street and found Russell Novak, 70, with multiple gunshot wounds. Police said responders attempted life-saving efforts, but Novak died of his injuries.

Police and the Kendall County Sheriff's Office said officers found a car believed to be involved in the shooting and began a pursuit that ended in the area of Route 34 and Eola Road in Aurora.
The sheriff's office said the driver got out of the car with a gun and pointed it at a deputy. The deputy and a Plano officer both discharged their firearms "to protect the people present in the area and themselves," the sheriff's officer said.

The suspect, since identified as Nicholas Novak, was taken to Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead.
The Kane County Coroner's Office said Nicholas Novak died of a single gunshot wound, The Daily Herald reported.
Russell Novak's ex-wife told ABC Chicago that Nicholas Novak was their son.
Russell Novak's obituary said he is survived by another son, two brothers and his partner, as well as a granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
"Russell has been known in the area as an avid bowler in the area at Parkside Lanes and Strike and Spare," the obituary said. "He loved his Harley. He was the most kind and caring person and was loved by many."
A GoFundMe campaign was set up to fund a celebration of life and to benefit the American Heart Association in Russell Novak's memory.
