DAR Announces Winner of 2024-25 Good Citizens Award

The Barrington, IL-based Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, named Jonathan Curbelo, BHS senior, its 2024-2025 Good Citizens Award recipient.

The Barrington, IL-based Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, named Jonathan Curbelo, a senior at Barrington High School, the winner of its 2024-25 Good Citizens Award.

Jonathan competed in the Chapter’s essay contest and received a $1,000 scholarship for his winning essay on the topic, “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It – Service is an essential attribute of a good citizen. Discuss how service can foster a strong sense of community and strengthen our American identity.”

Jonathan is a senior at Barrington High School where he achieved a weighted GPA of 4.67. He participates in the varsity cross country team, student council, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and the Latino leadership group. Jonathan is a two-time MSL (Mid-Suburban League) All-Conference athlete. He also actively volunteers at his church, serving over 1,200 hours during his four years in high school.

Jonathan has been self-employed throughout high school doing yard work, clearing snow and leaves. He plans to attend Northwestern University in the fall with a double major in education and political science.

The Signal Hill Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was chartered fifty years ago in Barrington, IL in 1972. NSDAR is a volunteer women’s service organization headquartered in Washington, DC.

DAR members promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service, and more.

Since the national organization was founded in 1890, over one million women have joined NSDAR. Membership is open to any woman aged eighteen and over who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution.
