According to Smith Village, planning for the project began in 2017. Construction was accelerated because tradespeople were named essential workers during the pandemic, making this wing ready for total occupancy six months sooner than initially planned.

In addition to the modernization of the Johanson Wing, other recent updates totaling $6 million include the addition of a pub and theater as well as renovation of the community hall and main entrance built in 2008.

Smith Village, which opened at its current location in 1924, transformed its original campus with new construction valued at $68 million in 2008 to create a contemporary continuing care retirement community.

Today, Smith Village is home to close to 250 adults, 62 years and older, who enjoy amenities in independent and assisted living, memory care, short-term stay rehab and skilled nursing care residents benefiting from healthcare and lifestyle programs.
