Homicides in Chicago Outpace Last Year

The number of homicides in Chicago are up 27 percent over the same time period in 2011.

There have been three homicides in Beverly since the start of 2007. The last occurred on April 27 of this year when Brian Jones, 20, was shot in an alley of the 9000 block of Claremont Avenue.

Chicago's homicide numbers recently have received a great deal of national attention, and it's not difficult to figure out why. 

The statistics are quite simply staggering.

To date the August homicide number sits at 40, according to the Chicago Tribune. The same data show that 47 people were killed in June and another 48 in July. The RedEye has been keeping track of the homicides with the use of a monthly map with information on each victim, tracked by neighborhood.

There have not been any homicides in Mt. Greenwood since the site began tracking data in 2007.

So far, 348 people have been killed in Chicago in 2012, compared to 265 people during the same time period of 2011, ABC-7 reports.

In recent weeks, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has been talking with federal crime fighting agencies in an attempt to coordinate new strategies to combat the rising crime numbers, Sun-Times Media reports.
