South Side Man Who Shot Officer Soderberg Found Guilty

Judge rejects claim of self defense.

A judge wasn’t swayed by accused cop killer Bryant Brewer’s argument that he acted in self-defense when he shot Chicago police officer Thor Soderberg in the back and head in 2010. On Tuesday night, Cook County Judge Tim Joyce made him a convicted cop killer by finding him guilty.

Defense attorney Caroline Glennon, who hoped for a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict, argued that Brewer, now 29, felt threatened by Soderberg, 43, after the officer stopped him from climbing a fence outside the police station in Englewood on July 7, 2010. Soderberg’s gun fell to the ground and Brewer picked up the weapon and shot him to death.
