Steuber Florist and Greenhouses: A Family Tradition, Neighborhood Fixture

By Christine Schmidt

In a community that grew around cemeteries, it only makes sense that Steuber Florist and Greenhouses opened in Mount Greenwood to provide flowers for graves.

Current owner Scot Steuber, whose grandfather founded the store in 1943, said that was back when flowers could be planted in the dirt near the graves at cemeteries, instead of in boxes or pots like today. Artificial flowers have largely replaced real floral decorations, but Steuber Florist and Greenhouses has stayed.

"We grow our plants right here on the premises," Steuber said. They offer a variety of cut flowers, designs, bouquets, and more for all occasions.

The best part about being in a close-knit community such as Mount Greenwood is that "you get to know your customers with a more personal connection in a professional relationship," Steuber said.

As she perused the flowers in the indoor greenhouse, customer Linda Fitzgerald said that she likes coming to Steuber Florist and Greenhouses because "they always have the largest and most lush selection. The people that work here are helpful and wonderful."

Melanie Petoske, who has worked at the florist and garden center for 21 years, said the store is the most bustling near Mothers’ Day. “The combination of the flower shop and the greenhouse makes the week of Mothers’ Day the busiest because traditionally that’s when people start planting their outdoor plants,” Petoske said.

Steuber Florist and Greenhouses sometimes offers gardening classes through third parties, according to Petoske.

“They’re not open to the public in general, but area businesses, organizations, gardening clubs, Beverly Bank for a seniors group and a group from Christ the King organize events” through the store, Petoske said.
