BHS Senior Earns Prestigious National Award

Angelica Payton was awarded the National Achievement Program's "Outstanding Participant" award, which is given to roughly 3,000 students nationwide.

senior Angelica Payton has received the National Achievement Program’s “Outstanding Participant” award, according to BHS Principal Fabby Williams.

The award, established in 1964 to provide recognition for the top 3% of outstanding African American high school throughout the country, is given annually to roughly 3,000 students nationwide. Winners are selected based on results of their Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which was taken last school year.

Payton, an honor student who hopes to major in biology when she heads to college next year, is a two-time 1st chair in the BHS Symphonic Band and a former member of the Raider Marching Band and Wind Symphony. She is also a member of the BHS Foreign Language Club, Brothers and Sisters in Control (BASIC), and Really Intelligent Girls Hang Together (RIGHT) and is a FOCUS leader (peer mediator and peer mentor.)

Her community-wide involvement includes ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics,) TSTM (Tomorrow’s Scientists Technicians and Managers,) Bolingbrook Academic Achievement Working Group and various activities at Bolingbrook Community Church and Alpha Missionary Baptist Church.

"We are thankful to God for this blessing and recognition," said Angelica's mother, Dorletta.
